The Italian Style Hamburger

This is what I define an Italian style hamburger, cause it looks like an hamburger but in practice is quite different from it for way of preparing and cooking. In Italian we call it a “schiacciatina” which means “pressed meat”. I think it is pretty tasty and softer than traditional American burgers. I am not saying those are less good though. Nothing can beat an In&Out juicy burger eaten on the sunny coast of California :)

Ingredients (for about 5 schiacciatine):

  • 500 g ground beef
  • 50 g grated Parmesan cheese
  • 4 slices of bread
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • fresh chopped parsley
  • black pepper
  • 1 egg
  • 1 glass of white wine
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 50 g cheddar cheese and 1 slice of ham

Soak the bread into water, then squeeze it.

In a bowl combine the ground beef, salt, egg, bread, parsley and black pepper.

With a wooden spoon or a using your hand, mix all the ingredients together till well incorporated.

Divide the meat into 5 balls. Take one ball and press it in your hand, in the middle place some cheese and a piece of ham. Close it well making attention that the cheese and ham is inside and wont come out while cooking.

Place your schiacciatine in a skillet with some olive oil. Cook till lightly brown from both sides.

Add the wine, cover with a lid and let cook at low heat for about 25-30 min.

Serve with your choice of side
